US pumpkin carver accidentally creates face of UK PM when trying to carve female witch

A giant pumpkin carver spent four hours turning this 1,500lb veg into a witch - only to be inundated with messages from Brits who said it looked like Boris Johnson. Joe Adkins, 46, grows enormous gourds in his back yard which he carves into giant faces, alongside others he gets from fairs and competitions. It can take him up to five hours to slice the intricate designs into the massive veg, and impressive videos showcase his skills. Hoe from Wheaton, Illinois, recently attempted to turn one 1,500lb beast into a witch's face. But when he uploaded a video of it to social media, he was inundated with messages from Brits congratulating him on his Boris replica. He said: "Most of the time I go with the shape of the pumpkin and I get what I get. "I won't do anything political because it riles people up. I feel like they're going to smash my pumpkin! "I was going for like a female witch, but the ones on TikTok that were overseas were like 'is this Boris Johnson?' "It's funny because over here not one person ever clicked that. It's amazing what people see." Joe has been growing and carving giant pumpkins for many years, and last Saturday (25/09) came second place in the Illinois Giant Pumpkin Association Weigh-Off. His pumpkin weighed 1342lbs (609kg), only 13lbs more than the third place contender. In 2016 he entered the biggest pumpkin he's ever grown - a whopping 1861lbs (844kg). Joe tries to grow four giant pumpkins each year and has two large patches for growing giant pumpkins on his property, totalling to about 5,000 square feet. "Basically instead of having grass I've got a lot of room back there," massage therapist Joe said. "It's a 50/50 passion between growing these pumpkins and carving them. "There's just so much that goes into it - they're super sensitive, much more like a house plant than growing corn. "The reason why I grow the pumpkins was so I could carve them. I got into carving many many years ago. "It evolved from little Jack-O-Lanterns then started getting bigger ones from a pumpkin patch, but that limited me to an 100 pound pumpkin. "So I thought I'm going to grow my own so I can carve a bigger one." He will plant the pumpkin seed in early April in a pot inside the house, and only about two weeks later the plant will have grown so much it needs to be planted outside. He said: "In about 60 days it goes from the size of a ping pong ball to the size of what it is, 1300lbs maybe. "It's absolutely incredible, each day you come out and its doubled in size in the rapid growth period. "It's so fascinating to watch them put on 60lbs a day year after year, it just completely blows my mind. "It's Harry Potter magical, it truly is. "We love Harry Potter and its like Hagrid's patch back there, the most magic you can have as an adult." After planting the famous Atlantic Giant Pumpkin seed, the keen grower does not just cross his fingers. He said: "From there we sample our soil - we send it to the lab, the lab sends us back scientific data, with that data we know what amendments or fertilisers need to go into the soil. "We take the information and balance our soil and now the seed has the perfect growing medium to grow in, "They're 90% water so they take a tonne of water and a lot of fertiliser, mostly ground fish and seaweed." Aside from growing his mega-pumpkins, Joe will carve intricate faces into pumpkins of any shape or size. The father-of-two is totally self-taught with carving, starting out with VHS tapes and into DVDs to improve his skills. On the weeks running up to Halloween he will be carving at least one new face a day. Regular sized Jack-O-Lantern pumpkins take Joe between 45 minutes and an hour to carve, of which he buys about a hundred in each year. He said: "I just go with the shape and thickness of the pumpkins and don't pre-plan what it will end up looking like. "I kind of have a general idea what this pumpkin will allow me to do, this or that, and it comes out how it is. "When I first started I would look through internet pictures and comic books but at this point I really find a lot of joy in finding out together. "Personally what I really love to carve, because I've gotten really fast at it, I'm able to carve a very hyper-realistic old troll pumpkin, they come out very very good every time. "I do pumpkins you can hold in your hand that take three to five minutes." He starts displaying his pumpkins outside his house in Wheaton, Illinois in the last week of September, and changes his display frequently with new ones as they start to rot. They come in all shapes and sizes, and can be up to six feet tall, but doesn't begin carving his giant pumpkins until the week before Halloween. Carving time only increases with the size of the fruit - he may spend up to five hours meticulously shaping an 1800lb (816kg) pumpkin. They also can cause home access issues for his family - wife Sarah, 46, and two daughters Paige and Carena, 18 and 16. "My kids are like 'oh my gosh dad we can't get anywhere!'" Joe joked. They don't stop at Halloween, because their are plenty left over for Autumnal scenes, Thanksgiving decorations and even for the Christmas display. Local school kids even take field trips to go and see Joe's incredible house displays. He said: "Our house is small it reminds me of a gingerbread house, the pumpkins look humongous. "We'll stack them up like little snowman with scarves and hats, as long as weather permits. "I love reactions from the little kids the best, but also a reaction from an adult who's never seen it. "They go from 'oh that's fake' and then they come over and then it's disbelief, and it's a whole plethora of questions that come from that. "Almost every reaction is 'oh my goodness!', everyone is amazed, they think it's just fantastic."
