Soldiers at Virginia’s Fort Lee were captured learning the Haka in footage posted to TikTok on May 28 and June 1.

This footage by Kenneth Wright II shows the soldiers’ first attempt at the ceremonial Maori dance as well as their progress made within just a few days.

Wright told Storyful he shot the footage on June 12 and 14 while stationed at the compound in 2019.

He was a senior drill sergeant at the time and said he asked the instructor, a specialist, whether “he knew how to Haka being that he was Somoan”.

“He said [yeah] and that he’d show the company how to do it,” Wright said. “The soldier ended up graduating before we could pellet the Haka altogether.” Credit: Kenneth Wright II via Storyful
