Wildfire Smoke Shrouds Whale Migration Off California Coast

Smoke from California’s Colorado Fire hung over the ocean as gray whales migrated off the coast of Big Sur.

Footage taken by whale-watching tour operator Monterey Bay Whale Watch shows the whale pods amid the wildfire smoke.

Monterey Bay Whale Watch, who said they filmed the video on January 23, told Storyful this was the “peak” of gray whale migration, with the whales traveling southbound from their feeding grounds in Alaska to their breeding grounds in Mexico.
