Watch as Sam Thompson cannot control his excitement over the production of… peas. The I’m a Celebrity winner couldn’t hide his enthusiasm when being walked through the process of harvesting and freezing them. He even had a go on one of the pea harvesters – called a viner - himself, before the peas were taken from field to factory in a military-like operation. Birds Eye, the UK’s largest single vining pea producer, took Sam Thompson behind the scenes at their pea operation, which covers Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, to learn all about their peas and how they make sure only the sweetest ones end up on your plate. It followed research where British families revealed their ultimate favourite vegetables – with the humble pea coming out on top, alongside broccoli. Speaking in partnership with the pea producers which commissioned the poll, Sam said: “It’s no surprise to see the pea is right up there as an ultimate family favourite – I love peas. “Seeing the pea harvest, the freezing process, and the passion and knowledge of the teams, was an eye-opening experience. “I don’t think many people would know that these peas are individually given a good old squeeze to check if they’re ready to be picked.”
