The October 1 deadline is rapidly approaching for Congress to avoid a government shutdown. A shutdown would disrupt the lives of millions of Americans who rely on federal services. One of the chief concerns among Americans is how this will affect the healthcare sector. Dr. Zeke Emanuel, Chair of the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the University of Pennsylvania, joins Yahoo Finance to breakdown what impacts - both immediate and long term - will have on healthcare in America.

Emanuel elaborates that during a short-term government shutdown, payments to hospitals and doctors won't be impacted, "but it will impact their ability to make improvements in the program and to run other projects that they're doing trying to improve the way Medicare functions."
