“We can’t stop. And it’s not easy at all. Sometimes we have to get off the canoe and push it on the mud which means having to endure fish bites and other risks.”

Residents say it's getting harder to use canoes to move around an area that once supported vegetable farming.

The Rio Negro river, one of the Amazon's main tributaries, registered a level of around 51 feet (15.5 meters) on Wednesday, near the historic low of about 42 feet (12.7 meters) recorded in October 2023, local media reported.

Drought has parched the tropical forest, fueled wildfires and stranded communities as rivers become too shallow for boats to pass.
