The US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama, attempted to break a world record as it launched nearly 5,000 model rockets on July 16 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 launch, local media reported.

The rocket used in the original moon landing mission, Saturn V, was developed at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville.

Local media reported that 4,923 out of 5,000 rockets launched at the same time, but it will be several weeks until Guinness officially confirms if a record was broken.

The record is currently held by Teylingen College in the Netherlands, which set off 4,231 model rockets in 2018, according to local media. Credit: Alabama Mayor Tommy Battle via Storyful
