Correction Issued About Viral Video of Toddler Pulled From Mud After Central Sulawesi Quake

Viral video of a toddler being pulled from the mud in Langaleso village, Central Sulawesi province, following the Indonesian earthquake, was actually recorded on September 28 and not on October 13, as was claimed several viral posts.

Facebook user Moh Ujhank Pradisty Pradisstyy shared the video on October 18, saying that he filmed it and that the child was rescued from the mud in Langaleso, in Sigi regency, on September 28, the evening the earthquake and the liquefaction occurred.

According to media reports, the mother also survived the disaster. Ujhank, who lives in Langaleso, also confirmed this to Storyful.

Ujhank’s post has been shared nearly 25,000 times and the video has attracted more than 5.8 million views.

Instagram account @makassar_iinfo, which also posted the false story, had since issued a correction.

A triple disaster of a 7.5-magnitude earthquake, tsunami and soil liquefaction hit Palu and nearby districts of Donggala, Sigi and Parigi Mautong on September 28, killing over 2,000 people.

An estimated 5,000 people were missing, presumably buried in liquefaction sites of Petobo and Balaroa, both in Palu, National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.
