Dark Plume of Smoke Rises Over Houston as Fire Rages on at Chemical Plant

A fire at a petrochemicals plant in the Houston area spread to eight storage tanks on March 18 causing a large plume of dark smoke to appear over Houston, local media reported.

The fire at the Intercontinental Terminals Company (ITC) caused schools in the Deer Park area to close on Monday; however, results of air quality tests did not exceed levels that would necessitate action being taken, the City of Deer Park Office of Emergency Management said.

Fire crews were reported to be working to reduce the risk of an explosion, which was described as “minimal” by ITC. No injuries were reported from the fire.
