Protesters in Valparaiso, Chile, lit fires in the streets and banged pots and pans on Tuesday, October 22, the fifth day of nationwide protests against economic inequality and the cost of living.

At least 16 people have died during the six days of continuous protests across the country, local media reported.

The protests began in response to a proposed hike in subway fares but have since expanded to encompass general anger about the cost of living and inequality in the country, according to reports. A state of emergency was declared on Friday, October 18, reports said.

The mayor of Valparaiso declared a “sanitary emergency” in the city on October 23, as municipal services such as trash collection were not able to be carried out due to barricades and street congestion from the ongoing protests, according to local reports.
