English Bomb Disposal Team Explodes WWII Mortar Shell in South Yorkshire

A bomb disposal team in England exploded a World War II mortar shell on Monday, May 25, after it was discovered by a civilian out running near the Langsett Reservoir in South Yorkshire, according to reports.

The Royal Logistic Corps (RLC) confirmed that the shell was live ordnance left over from when the area hosted a shooting range during WWII, the Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team (WMRT) said in a post on Facebook.

The mortar shell was disposed of in a controlled explosion on Monday evening — after civilian traffic had cleared the area — by a joint operation between the WMRT, South Yorkshire Police, and the RLC, the WMRT said.

“This kind of find is not uncommon in the area around Langsett Reservoir. If you do come across anything that does look suspicious, please don’t touch the device but mark the area if you can, phone the police and give an accurate location of your find,” said the WMRT.
