The exonerated Central Park Five received a standing ovation at the 2019 BET Awards.   On Sunday, Regina Hall introduced Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, Korey Wise, and Kevin Richardson.   “We are all on our own individual journey in life,” Wise stated.   As young teens 30 years ago, they were falsely accused and wrongly convicted of raping a white woman in New York’s Central Park. They each served sentence that lasted from six to 13 years. In 2002, DNA evidence and a confession from serial rapist, Mateo Reyes, exonerated the men.   “Your truth is the foundation your legacy will be built upon,” Santana stated. “Your truth will be the memories people keep long after you’re gone.”   Ava DuVernay’s four-part Netflix series, “When they See Us” has brought their story back into the headlines as it powerfully portrays the teens’ perspectives, detailing the fallout of their arrests and convictions. On June 12, Netflix announced that “When They See Us,” has been the most-watched series on Netflix in the U.S. every day since it premiered on May 31.   After the men were recognized at the BET Awards, Ava DuVernay tweeted, “#BETAWARDS #WhenTheySeeUs We see you, brothers. We see you.” This video, "The Exonerated Central Park Five Receive a Standing Ovation at the BET Awards", first appeared on nowthisnews.com.
