The New South Wales Rural Fire Service issued an emergency warning on December 3 as the Currowan Fire, which has destroyed buildings along the south coast of the region, continued to threaten coastal communities.

“The fire continues to burn in an easterly direction towards a number of coastal communities. Firefighters are working to protect homes where possible. There are still a number of spot fires starting ahead of the main fire front in the Termeil National Park,” a statement posted to Facebook said.

The statement warned residents in Kioloa, Pretty Beach, Pebbly Beach, Depot Beach and Durras North areas to “seek shelter as the fire approaches.”

Jess McAlpine from Bawley Point, which lies less than a 10-minute drive from Kioloa, captured this footage of the bushfire, and emergency services responding to it, on December 3.

McAlpine said this footage was taken in Kioloa, which lies next to a large forest, and that her family “have bags packed ready to leave if our property is threatened in any way.” She added she had “total faith” in the Rural Fire Service “to tackle this and keep our small community safe.” Credit: Jess McAlpine via Storyful
