The current speaker of parliament in Maldives, and former president of the country, Mohamed Nasheed, was reportedly injured in an explosion near his home, according to statements made by the Maldivian Democratic Party.

ADK Hospital in Male, where Nasheed was taken for treatment, confirmed that the politician was “brought to the hospital with multiple injuries” at around 8:30 pm. The hospital said that he was in stable condition but in a later tweet said that medical teams were conducting surgery on Nasheed.

This footage, livestreamed at the hospital, shows crowds, including members of the media, gathered outside. Law enforcement can also be seen guarding an entrance to the facility.

Nasheed served as president between 2008 and 2012, and became parliament speaker in 2019 after facing criminal charges that Amnesty International has described as “politically motivated” and a period of exile. Credit: Mūā Dī Mwāh via Storyful
