Google Fined €1.49 Billion for Breaching EU Advertising Rules

The European Commission handed down a €1.49 billion fine to Google for breaching EU advertising rules on Wednesday, March 20, Google’s third EU fine in three years.

In a press release, the commission said: “Google has abused its market dominance by imposing a number of restrictive clauses in contracts with third-party websites which prevented Google’s rivals from placing their search adverts on these websites.”

In June 2017, the commission fined Google €2.42 billion for “abusing its dominance as a search engine” to give preference to its own shopping service, and, in July 2018, the commission fined Google €4.34 billion for “illegal practices regarding Android mobile devices” to “strengthen the dominance” of Google’s search engines. Google announced a change to its practices in response to the second fine on Tuesday, March 19.

The latest fine comes after Google’s unveiling of a new gaming platform called Stadia, which is expected to launch in 2019. Credit: European Commission via Storyful
