Ice Sheets Collide Producing Mesmerizing Crystal Display on Burt Lake, Michigan

Thomas Rigg recorded this video of ice on Burt Lake Michigan, on April 21.

Rigg told Storyful that it appeared to him that the wind was pushing a thin layer of ice towards the shore, which was then hitting stationary ice and producing ice shards.

A similar phenomenon on Lake Michigan was reported in March, 2019. In that instance the movement of ice was reportedly caused not by wind, but by an increasing volume of water as ice melted, which had the effect of pushing remaining ice towards the shore.

The video shows the ice shards being created in front of Rigg. The shards collectively form incredible crystal-like structures attached to the ice. Credit: Thomas G Rigg via Storyful
