A police helicopter was seen flying over a deserted Bondi Beach in Sydney on April 2 after the area was identified as a local “hot spot” for the coronavirus.

Bondi Beach was closed after visitors attracted controversy for ignoring social-distancing guidelines and packing the sand on March 19. The area was later identified as being a COVID-19 hot spot after an outbreak of the disease among backpackers. A pop-up testing clinic was set up near the beach.

On March 30, the Australian government introduced strict new lockdown rules in a bid to stop the spread of COVID-19. From the following day onwards, gatherings of more than two people were banned, unless the individuals lived in the same household. Residents were told to leave their homes only for work or education, shopping for essentials, medical needs or exercise.

New South Wales police had since been seen moving on sunbathers from Sydney parks, and reportedly breaking up parties involving backpackers.
