Protesters March to Venezuelan Air Base to Petition for Humanitarian Aid

Hundreds of protesters in Caracas, Venezuela, marched to the nearby La Carlota Air Base to petition the armed forces to allow humanitarian aid into the country on Saturday, February 23.

Video from outside the air base shows crowds of protesters chanting at soldiers through a set of gates, imploring them to join the fight against Nicolás Maduro. Juan Guaidó, the country’s opposition leader and self-declared interim president, said on Saturday that military personnel who defected were welcome and that they had decided to stand on the side of the constitution.

The march came amid a nationwide rally for humanitarian aid. On Friday, February 22, members of the national armed forces and supporters of Guaidó clashed at Venezuela’s border when soldiers prevented aid from entering the country. Elsewhere in Venezuela, soldiers blocked convoys from traveling to the border in order to receive aid shipments. Credit: Desireé Lozano via Storyful
