As temperatures dropped below 40 F in Florida on January 21 and 22, locals contended with cold-stunned reptiles littering the ground, as the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast.

Chef Michell Sanchez uploaded footage showing him stopping his car in Kendall, Florida, near Miami, to scoop up an iguana sprawled on the road.

The NWS issued an alert on January 21 saying, “This isn’t something we usually forecast, but don’t be surprised if you see Iguanas falling from the trees tonight as lows drop into the 30s and 40s. Brrrr!”

Sanchez told Storyful, “We were on our way home from work and noticed the lifeless iguana in the middle of a major street … We got home and pulled out a warmer we use for catering and placed the lifeless iguana under it.”

Sanchez added, “About an hour later it began to breathe, and a little after that, it opened its eyes. We placed it in our shower with the heat lamp and let it heal … The next day it was moving in the shower and even ate some lettuce. I grabbed it and let it go in our backyard by the canal, where it immediately took off happy.” Credit: Michell Sanchez via Storyful
