The US Coast Guard broke up ice along Maine’s Penobscot River on January 23 to “facilitate safe navigation” and help keep waterways open during the winter months.

The US Coast Guard Sector Northern New England posted this video, which shows the agency’s “domestic icebreaking operations.” The video shows a vessel traveling along the partially frozen river, leaving split and broken chunks of ice in its wake amid loud clanking.

The Coast Guard said it also works to “break and flush ice” to improve the flow of ice-jammed rivers that are known to flood. Credit: US Coast Guard Sector Northern New England via Storyful
