The US Navy tested a high-powered laser weapon in the Pacific Ocean on May 16, disabling a drone with the weapon, footage released by the military shows.

The laser was fired from the USS Portland and hit an unmanned aerial vehicle, which can be seen lighting up in footage taken by the Navy. The weapon onboard the Portland is officially known as a Solid State Laser – Technology Maturation Laser Weapon System Demonstrator (LWSD) MK 2 MOD 0.

“By conducting advanced at-sea tests against UAVs and small crafts, we will gain valuable information on the capabilities of the Solid State Laser Weapons System Demonstrator against potential threats,” said Captain Karrey Sanders, the ship’s commanding officer.

According to press reports, this was the first instance of the weapon’s use publicly reported by the military. Credit: US Navy via Storyful

My 10-year-old self loves footage of a real ship firing a laser canon. Let's get that laser beam working in the visible spectrum and the ship capable of spaceflight and I'm good.

In 1978 or 79 the Navy took a small laser to sea. Had done some work on the control room on a Friday. We went back to finish on Monday and it was gone. Rumor control said it was put on a ship and fired into the water but only killed fish. Life at Lawrence Labs could be funny. Point is it was 1979 and it was a Navy Laser.....they been trying for a long time. The other rumor was it would burn up a sub. Back then it took MANY acres of 25mf 100kv capacitors to fire off exciter lamps to fire a laser of substance that could ignite a small hydrogen bomb. The Fusion project split the beam into 26 arms. The lamps required 26 trillion watts of rising DC to charge the caps. Being able to power this required many people over many years. Amazing! Any old swabbies know if this is the same that was tested 2 years ago?

This is really cool and I hope they are using FEL laser tech and not outdated IR laser tech because if they do the will put IR reflective shielding on the outside of the drones missiles etc. The way to go is FEL lasers that can fine tune wavelength output to match the absorption of the outer skin of the target.

Great! Maybe the WH press secretary can use this laser to disable the media.

A Drone was shot down by a laser back in the 1960's. Proved it's weight back then. Politics stopped further funding until now.

Well, I believe it, only because I've seen these things in action, and I know firsthand that it's all real.

That being said...as far as actual *proof* of anything...all we see is a light coming from a ship, and then a drone catching fire.

They can make a laser that takes down a large drone but they can't get a clear video of the event. They need that zoom lens for cell phones that keeps popping up on my news feed.
