Vehicles Carrying Coffins Wait Outside Cemetery as Coronavirus Devastates Guayaquil

A line of cars and trucks carrying coffins formed outside a cemetery in Ecuador’s largest city, Guayaquil, on April 6 as authorities reportedly battled to cope with a surge in deaths linked to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cardboard coffins were being distributed to families of those who died following the outbreak of the virus, wihle a special hotline had been set up for those waiting for bodies to be removed from their homes, according to reports.

While fewer than 200 coronavirus-linked deaths had been officially recorded across Ecuador by April 6, reports said, the country’s president conceded the true count was likely to be far higher due to the rapid spread of the virus.

In this video, a line of vehicles — many of which have coffins visible inside or strapped to their roofs — stretches to the gates of the Jardines de Esperanza cemetery in Guayaquil. Several people can be seen standing near the vehicles wearing face masks.
