Storm Sally was upgraded to a Category 1 hurricane as floodwaters rose in Hopedale, Louisiana – part of the New Orleans metropolitan area – on Monday, September 14, according to St Bernard Parish.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Monday morning that Sally “rapidly” strengthened into a hurricane with winds reaching 90 mph. The NHC warned of coastal flooding and “dangerous” storm surge.

Video filmed by officials from St Bernard Parish shows water levels rising in Hopedale.

Local news reports said the parish, which had previously declared a state of emergency, set up pumps in the area to prepare for the hurricane’s arrival. Sally has been forecast to make landfall on Tuesday. Credit: St. Bernard Parish via Storyful
