Heavy snowfall cut power to thousands and left downed trees strewn across northern New Jersey on Tuesday, December 3, local media reported.

Power was cut for more than 40,500 Jersey Central Power and Light (JCP&L) customers as of Tuesday at 10.40 am, with the majority of outages reported in northern New Jersey, according to the electric company’s outage map.

This video, shared by New Jersey-based J&B Landscape company, shows power lines bowing under the weight of snow in Sussex County, northern New Jersey, on Tuesday. It also shows fallen trees littering the snowy ground.

By Tuesday morning, a low of 5.5 inches of snow and a high of 14.3 inches were recorded in the Sussex County towns Newton and Highland Lakes, respectively, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) snowfall reports.

J&B Landscape said downed trees and large branches were found along “many” roads in northwestern New Jersey. The New Jersey Department of Transportation said several roads were closed on Tuesday due to downed trees and crashes.

Though the “major” winter storm dumping snow on the northeast was beginning to subside, there was still another day of “impactful winter weather” forecast for Tuesday, the NWS said.
