Drone footage taken on October 22 shows lava in various stages of cooling along La Palma’s coastline, as local officials reported extensive damage to crops on the island.

As of Saturday, lava had extended to cover 891.9 hectares (3.44 square miles) of the island, according to the European Union’s Copernicus satellite program. Imagery analyzed by scientists also showed that 2,143 buildings had been destroyed by volcanic activity.

Local officials in La Palma reported on Sunday that some 259 hectares (1 square mile) of cropland had been impacted by the volcano, including banana and avocado fields, as well as vineyards.

This footage, released by the Spanish Geological and Mining Institute (IGME), shows lava flows in coastal areas.

Some 7,000 people have been forced to leave their homes since the start of eruptions on September 19. This week, dozens of homes were ordered evacuated due to the threat of lava. Credit: IGME via Storyful
