Bison Released to Native Lands on South Dakota Reservation

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and its partners released 100 bison back to their native plains, the newly created Wolakota Buffalo Range in South Dakota’s Rosebud Indian Reservation, on Friday, October 30.

The Department of the Interior (DOI) officials, Rosebud Sioux Tribe leaders, and WWF welcomed the bison onto nearly 28,000 acres of Lakota land, according to a release sent to Storyful.

The homecoming was part of an ongoing effort to create the largest Native owned and operated bison herd in North America that will eventually be home to as many as 1,500 bison, the release said.
