Monterey County police arrested a man at the base of cliffs near Big Sur on Friday, September 13, after a high-speed chase along the coastline that involved police, park rangers and California Highway Patrol air and ground units.

Police said they were responding to a water rescue call near the Point Sur Lighthouse when they spotted a silver Honda Civic driving erratically.

Police followed and when the driver refused to stop it led to a high-speed car chase along the southern coastline.

The suspect was eventually caught after a highway patrol officer stopped the car with spike strips and the driver fled the scene to nearby cliffs.

The suspect was airlifted to Natividad Medical Center for treatment for minor injuries. He faced charges of reckless driving, police said. Credit: Monterey County Sheriff’s Office via Storyful
