Fifty-five diplomatic missions have resumed operations in Kyiv, with new ambassadors from Belgium, Spain, Kyrgyzstan and Romania presenting their credentials in a ceremony on Wednesday, August 17, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said.

In his nightly address, Zelenskiy said the increased diplomatic presence in the Ukrainian capital was “one of the important indicators of the strength of our state”.

The president also discussed plans for an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) mission to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which was hit multiple times by shelling in recent weeks. Both Ukraine and Russia blamed each other for the attacks.

“Only absolute transparency and [a] controlled situation at and around the [Zaporizhzhia power plant] can guarantee a gradual return to normal nuclear safety for the Ukrainian state, for the international community, and for the IAEA,” he said. Credit: Volodymyr Zelenskiy via Storyful
