More than 70 bushfires were burning across Queensland on November 18, with four at “watch and act” level as emergency services worked against “very high” and “high” levels of fire danger across the state.

Major blazes were threatening communities in Pechey, Maroon, Clumber, and on Moreton Island, according to the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service (QFES). Evacuations were ordered for those on Moreton Island while a number of residents near the Pechey, Maroon, and Clumber fires were told to “prepare to leave”.

This footage shows embers flying off a burning tree at the Pechey fire near Toowoomba, on November 17.

At least 22 fire trucks and appliances were stationed in the nearby town of Esk to fight the blaze should conditions spiral while the New South Wales Large Air Tanker (LAT) was brought in to slow the fire’s advance, Acting Commissioner of the QFES Mike Wassing told media.

“With these large fires, we’ll be fighting some of these fires for weeks yet until we get significant rainfall,” Wassing said.
