Spanish emergency services were fighting to stop a wildfire spreading into the Castellon town of Montan on Monday, March 27.

Video from Spain’s Military Emergencies Unit, or Unidad Militar de Emergencias (UME), shows helicopters filling buckets from nearby water sources to dump onto flames in the hills surrounding the town.

A caption said the emergency work had been done to prevent the fire reaching houses.

In a statement on Twitter, Spain’s prime minister, Pedro Sanchez, wrote: “The climate emergency is a current and urgent crisis. It deals damage like what we’re seeing in #IFVillanuevaViver. My recognition of the great work of all the public servants who fight against the fire. You have the support of this government,” according to a machine translation.

The fire had burned around 4,300 hectares in the Valencia region by the early hours of Tuesday, March 28, emergency services said. The GVA Emergency Coordination Center said around 1,600 people have been forced to evacuate. Credit: Unidad Militar de Emergencias via Storyful
