A bushfire burning near Canberra was upgraded to emergency warning level on November 29, with firefighters warning local residents that it was too late for them to leave.

The NSW Rural Fire Service warned residents of Bombay, Little Bombay and surrounding areas west of Braidwood that they should seek shelter at around 4:00 pm.

The fire forced the closure of a part of the Kings Highway in both directions.

Smoke from the fire blanketed Canberra and caused health warnings to be issued over the poor air quality.
