Huge 'Smokenado' Swirls Above Coconut Fire in Texas

A huge “smokenado” was captured swirling over the Coconut fire in Wilbarger County, Texas on May 18.

This video, taken by Seymour Volunteer Fire Department fireman Sid Winn at Waggoner Ranch, shows a smoke whirl resulting from two fires merging together amid strong winds. According to Winn, the vortex was spawned after an attempt to control a fire by back-burning another area.

“It began as a small whirlwind and began to grow in size and strength,” Winn told Storyful. “The wind generated from the [smoke whirl] sounded like jet engines.”

The Texas A&M Forest Service reported that the fire is at an “estimated 25,000 acres” and 35 percent contained as of May 19. Credit: Sid Winn via Storyful
