At least 16 people have died in six days of continuous protests against income inequality across Chile, local media reported.

Looters have ravaged stores and buildings have burned during protest actions and clashes with police. Five people reportedly died in a factory fire in Santiago on Sunday, October 20.

Chilean authorities were seen firing tear gas from an armored vehicle at protesters in the streets of the capital, Santiago, on Tuesday, October 22.

A state of emergency was declared on Friday, October 18, reports said.

The protests began in response to a proposed hike in subway fares but have since expanded to encompass general anger about the cost of living and inequality in the country, according to reports.
