Protesters Hurl Tear Gas Back at Security Forces in Beirut

Lebanese security forces used tear gas and water cannon against protesters in Beirut during clashes on January 18 that left dozens injured.

This video shows protesters facing a hail of tear gas canisters as they retreated from near Martyrs’ Square, in central Beirut. Some of protesters hurl the canisters back.

According to reports, upwards of 160 people were injured in the confrontations.

Protests have wracked Lebanon for months, as residents gather across sectarian lines to express anger about the political and economic elite in the country. The latest bout of protests in the new year suggest they are not satisfied with the government’s response. Credit: Alia Awada via Storyful
