Smoke Darkens Morning Sky Over Fire-Ravaged Southwest Turkey

Wildfire smoke dulled the morning light in Turkey’s southwestern Mugla province on Thursday, August 5, as evacuations continued in areas including the Kemerkoy power plant, which flames reached Wednesday evening, and the coastal town of Oren.

This footage, taken by Dilan Bal, shows smoke hanging over the D550 state road in Akcaova, a village outside the city of Mugla.

On Tuesday, Bal tweeted that though she was in the city of Mugla, “far from the fire area,” she could feel heat from the fires. “The blowing wind is like a flame,” she wrote, next to sad emojis.

Flames from a wildfire that reached the grounds of the Kemerkoy plant in southwest Turkey on Wednesday evening, prompting evacuations, were extinguished on Thursday, local officials said, as wider containment efforts continued. That fire was one of more than 160 fires that had broken out in Turkey since July 28. At least eight people died as a result of the fires, authorities said. Credit: Dilan Bal via Storyful
