Split Tree Seen Amid Severe Thunderstorm Warning in Eastern Mississippi

Damage was reported on the campus of Mississippi State University (MSU) in Starkville on Monday, December 6, amid a severe thunderstorm warning for the area.

Footage filmed by MSU meteorology student Maggye McCallie shows a split tree due to a lightning strike on Monday morning, she said. “Happy finals week, Bulldogs,” she wrote in a tweet.

A line of storms was forecast to move across central and southern parts of the Jackson area through early afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. A few storms could be severe, potentially bringing damaging winds up to 60 mph, nickel-sized hail, and a tornado, they warned. Credit: Maggye McCallie via Storyful
