Thousands took to the streets of Melbourne, Victoria, to protest “Invasion Day,” also known as Australia Day, on January 26.

Protesters called for Australia Day, which marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British ships at Port Jackson, New South Wales, to be abolished.

“We will stand together and march together this January 26 to protest the ongoing colonial violence on our people,” an event page for the rally said.

The protest was one of many held in major cities across the country.
