A doctor in the United Kingdom shared a breathing technique meant to help COVID-19 patients, which received praise from JK Rowling after she said it helped her recover from a suspected coronavirus case.

Dr Sarfaraz Munshi of Queen’s Hospital in Romford, England, shared a video describing the technique that helps “a good amount of air” get into the patient’s lungs. The technique includes a series of deep breaths, opening the airways with a “big cough,” and also lying down and taking slow, deep breaths for 10 minutes, according to Munshi.

Rowling encouraged her Twitter followers on April 6 to watch the video, adding that the technique helped relieve her respiratory symptoms. Rowling said she has now recovered but had “all symptoms” of COVID-19 over the last two weeks. Rowling said she had not been tested.

“I really am completely recovered and wanted to share a technique that’s recommended by doctors, costs nothing, has no nasty side effects but could help you/your loved ones a lot, as it did me,” Rowling said on Twitter.

Munshi said he learned of the breathing method from Sue Elliot, the interim director of Quality, Governance and Nursing at Partnership of East London Cooperatives, a nonprofit organization that works with healthcare professionals in the UK.

“I want you guys to start doing this if you have the infection, right from the beginning. If you want to do it before you even pick up the infection, good idea,” Munshi said in the video.

It’s unclear if this technique, which wasn’t named in the video, has been recommended by other physicians treating COVID-19 patients. Credit: Dr Sarfaraz Munshi via Storyful
