Unification Church Followers Protest Japanese Media Coverage

Followers of the Unification Church protested in Seoul, South Korea, on Thursday, August 18, against what they said was negative media coverage of the church following the killing of former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe.

The Unification Church-owned newspaper Segye said the demonstration was held to protest “misinformation” regarding the church and “religious oppression”.

The mother of Abe’s suspected killer was reported to be a member of the Unification Church. The 41-year-old suspect, Tetsuya Yamagami, was said to have borne a grudge against the church after a donation made by his mother.

Japan’s Kyodo News agency said the protesters were mostly female Japanese followers of the church living locally and married to Korean men.
