The Washington Nationals advanced to their first ever World Series after they beat the St Louis Cardinals 7-4 to wrap up a four-game sweep and claim the title as National League champions on Tuesday, October 15.

The Nationals have played in DC since 2005 when the Montreal Expos relocated to the US capital. The team won four National League (NL) East titles, only to lose every time in the first round of the playoffs.

This year, the team finished second in the NL East and beat the Milwaukee Brewers to claim wild-card status.

The Nationals beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Division Series before they faced the Cardinals.

The team will face either the Houston Astros or New York Yankees in the World Series.
