The funeral for marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum was held in his home village of Chepkorio, Kenya, on Friday, February 23, following his death in a fatal car crash less than a fortnight before.

The service was attended by hundreds of mourners, including political and sporting dignitaries such as Kenyan President William Ruto and World Athletics President Sebastian Coe.

Kiptum set the world record in Chicago in October 2023, with a time of 2 hours and 35 seconds, beating the time of his compatriot Eliud Kipchoge by 34 seconds. He had been training in preparation for an attempt to break the two-hour marathon barrier.

Mourners had waited from 5 am to get a place for the funeral, according to the Daily Nation.
