Basketball Announcer Replaced After Calling Opposing Team's Names 'Pretty Disgusting'

An Oklahoma school district has apologised after a long-time basketball announcer called the names of the girls on an opposing team ‘’pretty disgusting’’ on February 21.

Lorna Pollard was at the game watching her daughter’s team, Crooked Oak High School, play against Newkirk High School and filmed the starting players lining up to have their names announced.

“Now, their names are pretty disgusting,” the announcer can be heard saying. “But I’m going to try to call them out.”

Newkirk Public Schools Superintendent Brady Barnes issued an apology on February 22, saying the announcer “made an unfortunate and inappropriate personal comment” and was replaced at half time.

“In around 20 years of announcing Newkirk games, this is the first time something like this has occurred,” the statement read.

In a follow-up Facebook post, Pollard wrote: “91% of our little school is minority and face racism on a daily basis and are so often told to just brush things off and that’s not OK.”
