Severe hail and wind, as well as thunder and lightning, battered parts of New South Wales, Victoria and the Australian Capital Territory on January 20 as storms swept across the region.

Two storms, described as “supercells” by the Bureau of Meteorology, hit the north and south suburbs of Sydney, bringing severe wind, giant hail and thunder and lightning to the area.

Video posted by a Kirrawee resident shows a chair being blown from the balcony of an apartment block and across a road as wind and rain hammered the Sydney suburb.

In the Blue Mountains, two tourists were struck by lightning when climbing a metal staircase. A 16-year-old boy and 34-year-old man were taken to Nepean Hospital, where both were reported to be in a stable condition. Credit: heydanielphotos via Storyful
