Creek Fire Threatens Town of Shaver Lake After 'Exploding' in Size

The town of Shaver Lake, California, was threatened by the Creek Fire on September 6 as locals and visitors were forced to evacuate in the face of the fast-growing blaze.

The fire in the Sierra National Forest, which began on Friday evening and spread to more than 45,000 acres by Sunday, earlier trapped people near Mammoth Pool Reservoir, resulting in over 200 evacuations. It was burning uncontained on the Sunday evening.

Local media reported that many visitors in town for the Labor Day weekend were told to leave the area alongside residents. The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office had issued a mandatory evacuation order on the Sunday morning.

Fresno County Supervisor Nathan Magsig told reporters that the Creek Fire had nearly been brought under control when it first started, however in the space of a few minutes it had “exploded in size.”
