Elizabeth Warren Visits Florida's Homestead Detention Center

Massachusetts Senator and Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren visited Homestead Detention Center in Miami-Dade County, Florida, on June 26, after meeting with activists the night before.

Video streamed by her campaign shows the Senator walking outside the facility and climbing up on a foot ladder with a young girl to speak to an assembled crowd. She waved at children she could see inside the center, press traveling with the candidate said.

Her impromptu visit to the center came after speaking to activists at a town hall on Tuesday night, the Senator said. Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar and South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg said they would visit the facility before the debate as well.

In recent days, immigration policy has been in the spotlight. Last week, the Trump administration announced and then delayed plans for ICE to conduct raids throughout the country aimed at deporting undocumented immigrants currently in the United States.

The government also argued before the Ninth Circuit that it did not violate a provision in the Flores Agreement that requires detained children be held in “safe and sanitary conditions,” after the children were not provided with soap and blankets. Credit: Elizabeth Warren via Storyful
