Giraffes Rescued From Flooded Kenyan Island

The last of nine critically endangered Rothschild’s giraffes have been floated to safety from a flooded island in Kenya, a conservation group said on April 12.

The last giraffes to catch the boat to safety were a mother, Ngarikoni, and her calf Noelle, the charity Save Giraffes Now said.

Video from the Northern Rangelands Trust shows Ngarikoni being tranquilized and caught by conservationists before being transported across Lake Baringo on a custom-built barge to a 4,400-acre sanctuary on the mainland. The video also shows Noelle on the same barge, with the giraffes joining the others at their new mainland sanctuary.

The rescue completed a 15-month project to rescue giraffes from a peninsula that was turned by flooding into a “disappearing” island, Save Giraffes Now said. Credit: Northern Rangelands Trust via Storyful
