A volcano began erupting on La Palma, one of Spain’s Canary Islands, on Sunday, September 19, leading thousands to evacuate and damaging more than 100 homes.
The Cumbre Vieja volcano’s eruption was reported around 3:30 pm local time on Sunday and sent smoke and lava spewing out of several fissures.
Between 5,000 and 10,000 people were expected to have to be evacuated, police said.
According to Canarian Weekly, 166 homes had been destroyed by lava flows by Tuesday. Many more structures remained at risk, the news site said.
