Long-Dry River Slowly Fills With Water as Rain Falls in Northern New South Wales

The dry riverbed of the Gwydir River in drought-struck northern New South Wales filled with water on January 10 after significant rainfall in the area.

Lindsay Groth filmed this video on the Friday morning overlooking the river in Bundarra, north-west of Armidale, which has been placed on severe water restrictions.

“Bundarra hasn’t had much rain but thankfully our catchment area has over the last three days,” she told Storyful, adding that the river hadn’t run through the town for around a year.

“We started level-five water restrictions on Monday and only had approx. 130 days left of water for the town … now our town pump hole is full.”

Armidale had received 28 mm of rainfall on January 9 and January 10, according to the Bureau of Meteorology, after an extended dry spell.

The region was part of the three-fifths of New South Wales that were classified as being in ‘intense drought’ as of January 8, according to the state’s Department of Primary Industries. Credit: Lindsay Groth via Storyful
