French President Emmanuel Macron met with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Monday, February 7, attempting to deescalate growing tensions along the Ukraine border, where Russia has sent over 100,000 troops.

Before his trip to the Kremlin, Macron sounded a conciliatory note, telling French media that Russia’s goal was “not Ukraine, but a clarification of the rules … with NATO and the EU.”

The two leaders spoke on Monday separated by a long oval table. This footage, released by the Russian Military, shows Putin and Macron greeting one another as the French president arrived. Credit: Russian Military via Storyful
