Mounted police officers and staff members wearing PPE were seen outside a public housing complex in Melbourne, Australia, on July 7, as 3,000 residents of nine apartment blocks were placed under “hard lockdown,” according to news reports.

This footage shows authorities outside the public housing complex, known locally as Flemington towers, on Racecourse Road in the Flemington area of Melbourne’s inner northwest. Donations that poured in for residents – who are not allowed to leave their homes – are also visible in the footage.

According to news reports, Victoria’s Premier Daniel Andrews announced a lockdown in Melbourne after Victoria recorded its largest daily increase in cases since the pandemic began.

Renewed restrictions mean that residents of the city can only leave their homes for essential travel while residents of the nine public housing units on lockdown cannot leave their homes for any reason.

The ABC reported that by July 6, 53 of 127 new coronavirus cases detected in Melbourne were linked to public housing. Credit: Madaale Productions via Storyful
